What is pronoun-verb agreement?

Pronoun-verb agreement means the verb in a sentence must match the pronoun. The verb changes to fit who is doing the action.

Examples:

  • She writes her name.
  • They write their names.
Note

The verb sounds different when the pronoun changes.

Using I and you with verbs

The pronouns I and you use the base form of the verb.

Examples:
  • I read every day.
  • I help my teacher.
  • You read every day.
  • You help your teacher.
Note

Do not add -s to the verb when using I or you.

Using he, she, and it with verbs

The pronouns he, she, and it use verbs that usually end in -s.

Examples:
  • He answers the question.
  • She follows the rules.
  • It belongs to the class.
Note

If the pronoun means one person or one thing, the verb often ends with -s.

The pronouns we and they talk about more than one person and use the base form of the verb.

Examples:
  • We share our ideas.
  • We follow directions.
  • They share their ideas.
  • They follow directions.
Note

When the pronoun means more than one, the verb does not end in -s.
