What are nouns?

Nouns are words that name people, places, animals, or things.

Examples:
  • person: teacher, girl
  • place: school, park
  • animal: dog, bird
  • thing: book, chair
Note

If you can see it, touch it, or name it, it is often a noun.

What are singular nouns?

A singular noun names one person, place, animal, or thing.

Examples:
  • one cat
  • one apple
  • one teacher
Note

Singular nouns talk about only one.

What are plural nouns?

A plural noun names more than one person, place, animal, or thing.

Examples:
  • two cats
  • three apples
  • many teachers
Note

Plural nouns usually mean more than one.

Making plural nouns

Most plural nouns are made by adding -s to the end of a singular noun.

Examples:
  • dog → dogs
  • book → books
  • car → cars
Note

When you add -s, the word shows there is more than one.

Plural nouns that add -es

Some nouns add -es to become plural.

Examples:
  • bus → buses
  • box → boxes
  • fox → foxes
Note

Add -es when a word is hard to say with just -s.

Using singular and plural nouns in sentences

Singular and plural nouns help sentences make sense by showing how many.

Examples:
  • The cat is sleeping.
  • The cats are sleeping.
  • I see two birds in the tree.
Note

Always check if your noun matches how many there are.
