TT.1 Which sentence tells about the present?
What Is Present Tense?
Present tense verbs tell about actions that are happening now or happen regularly. They show what is true in the present time.
- I play outside.
- She reads a book.
- They walk to school.
Ask yourself: Is this happening right now? If yes, use the present tense.
Present Tense with Singular Subjects
When the subject is he, she, or it, most verbs add -s at the end.
- He runs fast.
- She likes music.
- It jumps high.
Remember: With he, she, or it, add -s to most verbs.
Present Tense with Plural Subjects
When the subject is we, you, or they, verbs usually do not add -s.
- We play soccer.
- You help your friend.
- They sing together.
Plural subjects usually take the base form of the verb (no -s).
Special Case: The Verb "To Be"
The verb to be changes its form depending on the subject. In the present tense, use am, is, or are.
- I am six years old.
- She is happy.
- They are friends.
Remember: I am, He/She/It is, We/You/They are.
Using Present Tense in Sentences
Present tense verbs keep your sentences clear and easy to understand. Always make sure the verb matches the subject.
- Singular: The bird sings.
- Plural: The birds sing.
- Special case: We are ready.
When writing, check the subject first. Then choose the correct present tense verb to match.
