Examples:

  • the blue sky
  • an old book
Note

If a word answers the question What kind? about a noun, it is often an adjective.

Adjectives describe how something looks or feels

Some adjectives describe appearance, size, shape, or how something feels to the touch.

Examples:
  • the tall building
  • a soft blanket
  • the round table
Note

Many adjectives help readers create a picture in their minds.

Adjectives describe how many or how much

Some adjectives tell the number or amount of a noun.

Examples:
  • three cookies
  • many stars
  • few minutes
Note

Words like many, few, and numbers can be adjectives when they describe nouns.

Adjectives can tell which one

Some adjectives point out a specific noun or tell exactly which one you mean.

Examples:
  • this pencil
  • that dog
  • those shoes
Note

Words like this, that, these, and those are adjectives when they describe nouns.

Finding adjectives in sentences

To find an adjective, first find the noun. Then look for the word that describes it.

Examples:
  • The red apple fell from the tree.
  • She wore a new jacket.
  • The small bird sang loudly.
Note

An adjective is usually placed before the noun it describes, but sometimes it can come after a helping verb.
