TT.1 Is the subject singular or plural?
What is subject-verb agreement?
Subject-verb agreement means the verb in a sentence must match the subject in number. A singular subject takes a singular verb, and a plural subject takes a plural verb.
- The dog runs fast. (singular subject → plural verb)
- The dogs run fast. (plural subject → singular verb)
Always check if the subject is singular or plural before choosing the verb form.
How do you tell if the subject is singular or plural?
A singular subject refers to one person, place, thing, or idea. A plural subject refers to more than one.
- Singular: The cat sleeps on the bed.
- Plural: The cats sleep on the bed.
Look closely at the noun in the subject. Adding “s” usually makes it plural, but not always.
Using “is” and “are” correctly
The verb “is” is used with singular subjects. The verb “are” is used with plural subjects.
- She is my friend. (singular)
- They are my friends. (plural)
Remember: “is” = one, “are” = more than one.
Special cases in subject-verb agreement
Some subjects may look plural but are actually singular. Words like everyone and nobody are singular.
- Everyone is excited for the trip. (singular)
- Nobody wants to be late. (singular)
Do not be tricked! Even though “everyone” sounds like many, it takes a singular verb.
Subject-verb agreement in sentences
To check subject-verb agreement, find the subject of the sentence and match the verb to it.
- The teacher teaches the class. (singular)
- The teachers teach the class. (plural)
- My family is going on vacation. (singular group noun)
Always ask: Is my subject singular or plural? Then choose the verb form that matches.
