What is a sentence?

A sentence is a group of words that work together to share a complete idea. A correct sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with punctuation.

Examples:
  • The fox runs.
  • I like pizza.
  • We went home.
Note

If the words do not tell a full idea, they do not make a sentence.

Why does word order matter?

Word order is the way words are arranged in a sentence. The order of words helps the sentence make sense.

Examples:
  • Correct: The cat chased the mouse.
  • Incorrect: Chased mouse the cat the.
Note

Most sentences in English follow this order: who or what + action + more information.

How to order words to make a sentence

To order words correctly, decide who is doing something, what they are doing, and any extra details.

Steps:
  • Find the subject (who or what)
  • Find the verb (the action)
  • Add the remaining words in a clear order
Note

Reading the words out loud can help you hear if the sentence sounds right.

Putting words in the correct order

When words are mixed up, they must be placed in the correct order to form a clear sentence.

Examples:
  • Mixed up: to park went we the
  • Correct sentence: We went to the park.
  • Mixed up: reads every night she
  • Correct sentence: She reads every night.
Note

Make sure the sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a period, question mark, or exclamation point.

Checking your sentence

After ordering the words, check your sentence to be sure it is complete and clear.

Checklist:
  • Does it start with a capital letter?
  • Does it make sense when read aloud?
  • Does it end with the correct punctuation?
Note

A good sentence sounds right, looks right, and shares a complete idea.
